Anniversary Commemoration of the UN-China Partnership
Beijing, China, 11 October 2004 �United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today hailed
the UN�s twenty-fifth anniversary in China as �a
testimony to the strong partnerships the UN has forged here in China. Partnerships with the Government, but also with business and civil
society.�� Annan
emphasized that this partnership also applied within the United Nations itself
�so that many parts of the UN system now work together to place our collective
expertise at the disposal of the Chinese people�.��
Mr. Annan, accompanied by his wife, was
addressing UN staff and Government officials assembled at the UN compound to
commemorate the 25th Anniversary of UN presence in China.� He expressed special gratitude to�� State Counsellor
Mr Tang Jia Xuan �whose
presence here today typifies the strong and important relationship we have both
with him and with the Government and people of China, and sets the
stage for increased fruitful cooperation in the future�.
Mr. Khalid Malik, Resident Coordinator of UN in China, in his welcome
to the distinguished visitors, spoke of how the UN in China had been
working together with the Chinese government and people across the country for
25 years, and jointly witnessing unprecedented, heartening changes, success and
development.
�Throughout the
years, UN China has built up strong partnership with the Chinese government.
Together we aimed at improving the well-being of Chinese nation and people and
delivering the best we could,� said Malik.
In the
ceremony, the Secretary-General presented UN award to six eminent people, Li Lanqing, Huang Hua, Peng Peiyun, Deng Pufang, Wei Yu and Long Yongtu, who were
recognized for the special contribution they had made to China-UN cooperation. .
To commemorate the anniversary, UN China held an exhibition in the UNDP
garden to showcase 25-year of collaboration between China and the United
Nations. The exhibition consisted of eight booths, one for each of the UN Theme
Groups formed to coordinate the work of the various UN agencies working in China. The
exhibition will remain until UN Day, on 24 October with special viewings
organized for schools and community groups..
